We got a later start today because we didn't dock until 10am
(Atlantic Standard Time). We spent our entire time allowed on the island, on a
bus tour. Starting at 10:30am we left Sydney Harbor, which is home to Canada's
largest fiddle (45feet tall), and headed for Cabot Trail. We traveled along the
beautiful ocean side Cabot Trail to Cape Breton Island.
Cape Breton Island has a lot of Scottish Heritage. In fact, they
are taught the Scottish Gaelic language in schools here alongside English and
French. Many of the street signs and building signs are in English and Gaelic.
Celtic music is also huge here, hence the giant fiddle that welcomes you into
the Sydney Harbor. We continued the beautiful scenic drive and stopped along
the road at a couple scenic locations.
Look what we found on our ride up the mountain! |
We stopped for lunch at Freshwater Lake Beach. Despite the fact
that the temperature only made it to 70 (although it was only in the upper 60s
while we were there), many residents of the island were in their bathing suits
enjoying a day at the beach. They even had lifeguards there, although these
lifeguards were wearing jackets and pants!
We hopped back on the bus and continued on to the town of
Ingonish. Most of the land in Ingonish that is now occupied by a beautiful
hotel and golf course was originally owned by a doctor from Akron, Ohio!
Apparently he was sick of his friends overstaying their welcome on his property,
and loved his moonshine a little too much, so he moved back to Ohio. However,
his main house and guest cottages were converted into a large hotel, that is
still in operation today.

Then it was back on the bus for the long drive back to the boat.
Driving back we passed by Greco's Pizza....Jonny and Amanda....we think you might
have family up here :)
Our bus was
a little late...we were literally the last ones on the boat before it took
off...close call! Now it's time for dinner and to rest up for our big day
tomorrow in Charlottetown!
